Reading Goals & Challenges for 2022

What are your 2022 reading goals?

We’ve made it through yet another year of these unprecedented times, and it’s hard to believe it’s been close to two years since anything has felt normal. For many people, reading has been a stress reliever and a form of escapism from our current world. With that said, I want to challenge myself and anyone reading this post: read in 2022. Read more if you already read. Read challenging books if you are used to light and easy books. Read diverse books if you aren’t familiar with certain cultures. Read a different genre than you normally do. In this period of reflection and creating new resolutions, make some that you will actually enjoy doing.

I’ve gathered a few reading challenges hosted by various organizations, bloggers, etc. that I think would help inspire you to join or create your own reading challenge for 2022.

Book Riot's 2022 Read Harder Challenge: This challenge follows “a set of 24 tasks that invite readers to expand their worldview through books.” This challenge is for people who want to expand their reading habits, diversify their reading, and read more complex books. For example, some of the tasks for 2022 are to read a biography of a favorite author; read a collection of poetry; or read a history book about a time period you are unfamiliar with. While reading 24 books is nothing to scoff at, I think this challenge is excellent for both novices and bibliophiles alike!

2022 POPSUGAR Reading Challenge: This challenge has 50 prompts to challenge your reading for 2022. Similar to Book Riot’s challenge, this one includes various opportunities to read books and authors that you may not typically read or even know about. This challenge has very specific prompts, so I highly recommend this to more avid readers who are up to the challenge.

Booklist Queen's 2022 Reading Challenge: This challenge consists of 52 prompts—in other words, one book a week for the entire year. However, this challenge is meant to inspire readers simply to read more. So if that means one book a week or one book every two months, this challenge is for you! This list of prompts includes both generic and specific topics, so it’s easy to pick and choose what you want to read—unless you’re going for all 52 books, then there's no picking and choosing! Overall, this is a great challenge with incredible reading prompts; whether you’re wanting to read a few or read a lot, I suggest you take a peek at this list.

2022 Tackle My TBR Reading Challenge: This is a fun challenge hosted by Bookstagrammer @kimberlyfayereads. The overall challenge is to read at least 1 book off your TBR each month, but of course, if that isn’t enough of a challenge for you, go ahead and up that number to 5 or more! She’s got a lot of social media graphics and templates to use as well as challenge levels and monthly themes. I highly recommend this challenge to readers and bookstagrammers alike who are constantly neglecting their TBRs!

And finally, our Winter Blues Reading Challenge here in the Youth Services Department at Wilkes County Public Library is a great way to get inspired in the early months of 2022. Come see us today to pick up a task card. Happy reading!
