There is nothing more empowering than signing up for your own library card. Through access to technology, media resources and educational programs, a library card gives students the tools to succeed in the classroom and provides people of all ages opportunities to pursue their dreams and passions.
Libraries offer everything from early literacy programs to virtual homework help and GED classes, helping transform lives and communities through education. At WCPL you’ll find a wide variety of educational resources and activities. “Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children,” said Elizabeth Lee, Youth Services Librarian “During the pandemic, many programs have become virtual. For younger children, look for online story times, music & movement, and baby songs. For tweens and teens look for information on a new virtual book club. And for all ages the ever popular Monday Mayhem – virtual arts and crafts activity (all on the library’s Facebook page).”
Wilkes County Public Library along with libraries everywhere, continues to adapt and expand services that will meet the evolving needs of our community. If you haven't visited the library recently, stop by during September to see what's new and take part in the celebration. Do you have friends who don't have library cards? September is a great month to invite them to the library.
During September, Dom Bakeries (908 W. D. Street – N Wilkesboro) is partnering with WCPL to promote Library Card Sign-up Month. Every new cardholder registered in September will receive a coupon for a special free treat at Dom’s. When visiting Dom’s you will also receive a 10% discount on your bill by showing your library card! Dom’s Bakeries is also venue to WCPL’s Silent Book Club at 5:30 p.m. every first Tuesday night. Often with traditional book clubs there's the scramble to finish the assigned book, and the pressure to have something smart to say. Silent Book Club members meetup to read whatever they choose to, and Dom’s is a cool place to be a ‘social’ introvert . . . drop in to enjoy books, make friends, and treat yourself to something delicious.
Wilkes County Public Library is also recruiting partners from other local businesses to help promote Library Card Sign-up Month. Businesses can participate by offering perks to customers who show their library cards. Photos of cardholders at participating business locations must be posted on social media, using the #GetLibraryCarded@WilkesCountyPublicLibrary.
