Holiday travel isn’t the only way to escape in December. Sometimes, the best alternative is staying home with a good book — and Venice for Pleasure by J. G. Links shows just how far armchair travel can take you.

Born December 13, 1904, J. G. Links brings a lifetime of affection and deep knowledge of Venice to this warm, unhurried guide. Rather than rushing readers from landmark to landmark, he encourages them to pause, savor a cup of coffee, wander winding side streets, and notice the small, quiet pleasures that make the city so enchanting. Recently, while stuck at home on a snowy afternoon, I found myself transported through his pages — wandering sunlit canals, discovering hidden squares, and imagining the lively rhythm of Venetian life, all without leaving my chair.

Along the way, I learned about the architecture and centuries of history in this ancient city and discovered the work of Canaletto, the Venetian painter whose landscapes make Venice feel timeless and alive. Links also highlights sights that children and families would enjoy — gondolas gliding through narrow canals, masked figures during Carnival, and the simple thrill of crossing bridges where every turn offers a new discovery.

This December Birthday Bookdrop selection reminds us that travel doesn’t always require a suitcase. Sometimes all you need is curiosity, a little time, and a well-chosen book.

Coming in January: We trade Venetian wandering for sharp observation as we celebrate Edgar Allan Poe and his foundational detective story, “The Purloined Letter.” From armchair travel to armchair detection, the new year begins with a mystery.

The Reading Trap meets at noon on January 8 at the Traphill Branch Library to celebrate Poe’s birthday with food and “food-for-thought.” Come out and get caught in The Reading Trap!
