The Wilkes County Public Library launched a successful summer reading campaign with 639 people signed up to participate as of last Friday.  If you are reading this now, it is not too late to register . . . you have until Saturday, July 1.  This year the summer reading theme is ‘All Together Now’ with an emphasis on kindness, friendship and unity.  All ages are encouraged to relish in good reading and programs. In addition, there are many incentives for tracking your time spent reading.  Sign up, READ ON and win prizes!

Imagination Café, the library’s summer feeding program is offered for anyone 18 years or younger.  Stop by the library for a free lunch, fun crafts, and stay for live story time.  Three hundred children visited for lunch in June, and the library anticipates more to come during the months of July and August.  During June, the school nutrition office provided meals at feeding spots around the county.  Thankfully, the library will be able to keep feeding children throughout the summer with the help of local area restaurants.  A BIG THANK YOU goes to Little Cesare’s, Hardees, Dooley’s, Copper Barrel, Brushy Mountain BBQ, Subway, Dean’s Southern Bistro, Hadley’s, Chick-Fil-A, and Arby’s.

There are so many amazing programs too! Check the website calendar and save-the-dates.  Here are some highlights for children:  Western North Carolina Nature Center on July 6 (@2:00), Farmer Minor w/his pig on July 13 (@2:00), Gem Mining w/ Schiele Museum on July 20 (@2:00, 3:00, and 4:00), Wildlife Rehabilitation w/Lees McRae on July 25 (@3:30 pm).  Harry Potter Day takes on July 26 all day with a scavenger hunt, costume contest, and herbology 101.

Special author visits are also on the calendar for adult readers: Lisa Mathis shares her book The Body Auction at 5:30 p.m. on June 27.  Meet Melanie Sue Bowles, author of Liberty Biscuit, at 4:00 p.m. on July 18 and Jennifer Smith, author of My Chicken Thinks I’m a Quack at 5:30 p.m. on July 27.

Visit our branch library in Traphill, NC for Gem Mining fun with Schiele Museum at 11:00 a.m. on July 20 and see a Honeybee Demonstration at 1:00 p.m. on July 25.
