It's Love Your Library Month!

Tuesday, 25 January 2022 15:43

Move over St Valentine’s because 14 February is also Library Lovers’ Day!  In fact, the whole month of February is nationally recognized as Library Lover’s Month and is a chance for everyone to reconnect with Wilkes County Public Library and show a little library love.

You are invited to visit online with our county librarian, Suzanne Moore, on the first Thursday of every month (February 3).  All you need is a computer, tablet, or iPhone to log into the virtual ‘coffee talk’ at 9:00 a.m.  You will find the link on the library’s website in a front page banner . . . just click and join.  We want to hear your favorite things about our library (we are pretty partial to the staff).  We would also love to have you drop by anytime throughout the month of February and add a reason you love the library to our window of hearts. Do you love to read? Are you a big fan of our programs? Do you like the technology we offer? Let us know!

Save the Date for Special programming in February . . .

On February 5 at 11:00 a.m., the library will host a special program to welcome Martin Tucker, Vietnam Veteran / Photo-Journalist.  Martin has displayed some of this curated photography collection featuring experiences of North Carolina Vietnam Veterans in the library’s Community Room.  He will be visiting in person to bring more photos and stories highlighted in his book; Vietnam Photographs from North Carolina Veterans (copies available for purchase).  Every picture tells a story and these are important stories for us to remember.

On Saturday, February 12, come out and celebrate the 11th annual ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day’ with free events and activities for children and families. Launched in 2012, ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day’ has blossomed into an international celebration. The event was developed to spotlight libraries as vital community resources that enrich, educate, entertain, and encourage families everywhere to take their children to their local libraries.

Wilkes County Public Library will offer virtual story times and contests, take-home craft kits, and brand new StoryWalks at Fish Dam Creek and Smoot Park. Visit the library’s website and social media for more information.

“Since its inception, ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day’ activities have been made available to more than 39 million individuals and families across the U.S. and in countries around the globe,” said Jennifer Keohane, Connecticut Library Consortium’s Executive Director. “Taking children to the library helps them develop a love of reading and learning, but the benefits don’t end there. Choosing and checking out their own materials helps children learn independence, sharing, and responsibility. Library books and technology open up access to the world and fuel children’s curiosity and passions. And library programs provide myriad opportunities for learning, discovering, making friends, and having fun! If you want your children to become thoughtful, engaged citizens, start by bringing them to the library – on ‘Take Your Child to the Library Day’ or any day.”
