Beat the Heat with Summer Reading Adventures at Wilkes County Public Library!
Saturday, 29 June 2024 16:28by Suzanne Moore, Wilkes County Librarian
Check out some good books and join us for cool events to help you through the “dog days of summer.” There is something at the library for everyone and as of our last count, 597 children have signed up for this year’s program “Adventure Begins at Your Library.”
Don't miss out on the Imagination Café's summer feeding program! It is available for individuals aged 1 to 18 on a first-come, first-served basis starting at 11:00 a.m. Free lunches are provided by the county's school nutrition office from June to July. In August, Hardee's, Cinder Bistro, Lost Wombat, Chick-fil-A, Little Caesars, Bojangles, Domino's, Dooley's, and Subway are providing meals for children. Plus, there are regular after-lunch programs every day from noon to 1:00 p.m. The Imagination Café program schedule includes the LEGO Club on Mondays, Reader’s Theatre on Tuesdays, STEM Stories on Wednesdays, Move It & Groove It on Thursdays, and weekly guest readers for Fantastic Fridays.
The library will be closed on July 4th but reopens on July 5th for a special Fantastic Friday event featuring Lee Starr. Lee, our "hero in the neighborhood," is a decorated Army/Navy veteran of the Iraqi War. He will read one of his favorite childhood books for 'Operation Storytime.' Elaine and Lonnie Dushane from M.A.S.H. Llama Love Therapy will also visit. M.A.S.H. (Military and Service Heroes) is an independent charitable 501(c)(3) food pantry/resource for veterans, military families, and survivors. Elaine and Lonnie, new to Wilkes County, have just launched the Llama Love Therapy program. They are excited to share the joy and happiness these therapy llamas can provide to all who have experienced life-changing traumas. Those who are experiencing PTSD might find peace, those with autism might find tranquility, or a child who desperately needs a hug will have just that. These llamas are there to help.
Join us at Fish Dam Creek on Wednesdays at 3:00 p.m. for Art in the Park. Teen programming is available every Friday at 3:00 p.m. in the library. Come out for snacks, games, and lots of FUN!
