Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program

Audience: Adults (18+)
Location: Watauga County Public Library - Meeting Room

The Watauga County Public Library is proud to participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.) program. V.I.T.A. is an I.R.S. grant supported initiative which offers free income tax help to people making $54,000 a year or less. All volunteer tax preparers are certified and have received training to prepare basic tax returns.

SERVICE HOURS:

Fridays 2/3/2017 - 4/7/2017 3-6
Saturdays 2/4/2017 - 4/8/2017 9-12

LAST DAY OF SERVICE: Saturday April 8th, 2017

Qualification Requirements:

1. Income must be $54, 000 or below.

2. If you are currently a member of the military, clergy, or a small business owner, you do not qualify for V.I.T.A.. Although if you are self-employed with $10,000 or below in expenses, you do qualify for V.I.T.A..

3. If you have a farm, you do not qualify for V.I.T.A..

4. If you earned income in a state other than N.C. in 2016, you do not qualify for V.I.T.A. unless that income was earned in Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, New Hampshire or Tennessee (These states have no income tax).

Documents to bring on the day of your appointment:

1. Picture I.D.(Driver's License/Passport/Student I.D.)

2. Social Security card for each person included on return OR Medicare OR Military ID card.

3. Bring all W2s, 1099s and documents supporting income & expenses (total amount of itemized deductions).

4. Last year’s tax returns.(Important)

5. If filing jointly, bring your spouse! Otherwise, your spouse will have to come in to sign the return.

6. If claiming child care expenses, you need the name, address, and tax ID for the child care facility.

7. Affordable Health Care Statements (Forms 1095-A, B or C) OR a Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received.

8. For Direct Deposit, provide routing and account numbers.

9. A filled out Intake form. You can download a copy of the Intake Form (https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f13614c.pdf) or you can pick up a paper copy at the Reference Desk before the day of your appointment. If you are unable to fill out the Intake form before the day of your appointment, please come about 15 minutes early in order to have it completed before your scheduled consultation.
