EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION, AND TRAINING

High school diploma and previous work experience required; some college and/or Spanish desirable; previous library or customer service work experience preferred                                                                                                              

STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

An employee in this position performs circulation, library account registration and maintenance, readers’ advisory, and reference duties.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

  • Checks materials in and out through automated circulation system
  • Assists patrons in the use of self-checkout stations
  • Registers new library cardholders, renews cards, and updates patron information
  • Helps library users locate various library materials within the local library, the ARL
  • system, and the NC Cardinal consortium; helps library patrons use the online catalog
  • Places holds for patrons
  • Reads shelves to ensure materials are in proper order
  • Notifies users of overdue materials and reserves in person, by phone or mail
  • Collects fines and fees
  • Shelves books and other library materials as needed
  • Answers telephone at Circulation Desk and directs calls

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Excellent customer service skills including the ability to tactfully, courteously, and effectively handle patron complaints
  • Ability to use a computer and the Integrated Library System (ILS) to perform circulation duties
  • Ability to learn and follow complex procedures
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team setting
  • Ability to bend, lift, stoop and carry
