Get in Your Element this Fall with a Library Card

  Suzanne Moore, County Librarian

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a time when Wilkes County Public Library joins the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries nationwide to remind everyone about the valuable resources available with a library card.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month takes place each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries work together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.

During September, all newly registered patrons will receive a special treat from the library’s partner Dom Bakeries.   Dom Bakeries also provides treats for children, year-round, who complete the Downtown Read-a-Around.  This is a Story Walk sponsored by the library and hosted by local businesses on Tenth and Main streets.  Stop by the library to start the walk and end up back at the library to receive a token for the FREE Book Vending Machine as well (made possible by Wilkes Partnership for Children).

From borrowing books, ebooks, and audiobooks to getting homework help, learning new skills, or attending a book club or story time, a library card helps everyone do more of what they enjoy. All without stretching their budget.

Thank you to Disney and Pixar for allowing Elemental characters Ember and Wade to help spread the word about the value of a library card during Library Card Sign-up Month 2023.

You can help us celebrate and spread the word with our ‘spokes people’ Ember and Wade.   You can show some love for the local library on social media by telling how you make the most of your library card.

Do you love the library’s summer reading program, storytime, or book club? Checking out DVDs, magazines, or fishing poles? Do you simply enjoy getting lost in the magic of a good book?  Do you have friends who don't have a library card? Invite them to sign up during September.

Participating is easy:

  1. Snap a pic or shoot a video showcasing how you use your library.
  2. Post to Instagram, X, or on the I Love Libraries Facebook page with the hashtag #HowILibrary.
  3. Tag your library and your friends to help spread the word!

There is a chance to win great prizes!

So, let's see those book stacks, creative reading spots, and all the adventures that libraries take you on!  Join the #HowILibrary movement, and let's make this the best Library Card Sign-up Month ever!

There’s something for everyone at Wilkes County Public Library and signing up for a library card is the first step on the path to academic achievement and lifelong learning for students. It's elemental, really—everyone should have one!
