Due to rising infection rates, Appalachian Regional Library has resumed curbside and virtual-only services. We will provide updates as soon as we're able to safely re-open our buildings to the public.

Backyard Flexible Housing Options

Have you considered moving an older family member into your home, but want to find a solution that helps them keep their independence? Or have you considered downsizing but want to stay in your neighborhood, only to find few options exist? A right-sized home constructed in a backyard, or in a converted attic or garage may be the solution.
These right-sized apartments and cottages are fully-functional, discrete units located in existing neighborhoods. They can be designed to be accessible regardless of physical ability – with features such as zero-step entries, wider doorways, lower countertops and walk-in showers. These creative housing solutions can work for people of all ages and abilities.
